Creating an Office 2013 App-V package.

Microsoft Office 2013 can be deployed to clients in several ways.

  • Deploying the good old fasioned MSI installer
  • Deploying Office 2013 Click 2 Run (C2R).
  • Deploying Office 2013 as an App-V 5 package

The App-V package is based on the C2R bits.
To create the App-V package, you download and convert the C2R bits to end up with an App-V 5 package that can be deployed stand-alone, through the App-V 5 infrastructure or using System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1

Office Deployment Tool

We need the Office Deployment Tool for Click-to-Run to generate our App-v package.

Download the Office Deployment Tool from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36778

Run the downloaded officedeploymenttool.exe and have it extract to  a folder on your disk, for example c:\ODK

Prepare XML

Next, we need to prepare a XML file to instruct the Office Deployment Tool what to download for us.

<Configuration>
<Add SourcePath= ”C:\O365_x86” OfficeClientEdition="32" >
<Product ID="ProPlusVolume">
<Language ID="en-us" />
</Product>
</Add>
</Configuration>

Save as x86.xml in the same folder as where officedeploymenttool.exe was extracted to. In the example c:\ODT was used.

Download

Download the required Office Click-to-Run packages and languages using the following command
c:\ODT\Setup.exe /download c:\ODT\x64.xml

Convert

Convert the downloaded Office Click-to-Run packages for use with App-V 5.0
c:\ODT\Setup.exe /PACKAGER c:\ODT\x64.xml c:\APPV

Add and publish APPV package

Set-AppvClientConfiguration –EnablePackageScripts 1

This should be managed by a Group Policy setting in the production environment

Publish the Package through stand-alone, through the App-V 5 infrastructure or using System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1
